Adoption Process

To begin the adoption process, please submit an adoption questionnaire either online or in person. If you are a pet owner living in Montgomery County and already have dogs or cats, you must ensure that your pets are licensed. For those residing outside of Montgomery County, it is necessary to provide proof of a current rabies vaccine for your dogs, cats, or ferrets. Next, you will need to schedule an appointment to meet the animals, as walk-ins are subject to the availability of counselors. Once you have selected a pet, you will sign the adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and can take your new pet home on the same day.

Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood, MD

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC), managed by the Office of Animal Services, is dedicated to providing exceptional shelter and care for homeless, abused, and neglected animals in the community while ensuring the safety and welfare of the county's residents. As the only open-admissions municipal shelter in the county, we welcome all animals in need, including dogs, cats, farm animals, wildlife, and exotic species. Our trained staff delivers daily care, mental and physical enrichment, and health and wellness checks for the animals. The Center plays a vital role in the community by promoting responsible pet care through adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, vaccination clinics, and educational outreach. With the support of the community and partnerships with other animal welfare organizations, our Foster, Rescue, and Volunteer programs further enhance the lives of homeless animals. Animal Services Officers are available seven days a week to address citizen complaints and respond to animal emergencies around the clock. These responsibilities include handling cases of animal abuse and neglect, enforcing laws, managing reports of stray, rabid, or aggressive animals, and attending to sick or injured wildlife.
