Adoption Process

In response to COVID-19 and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV), we have updated our adoption process. We are currently offering a two-night foster-to-adopt program, allowing potential adopters to take a rabbit home to determine if they are a suitable match. After the initial two nights, adopters can finalize the adoption via email, which includes signing the adoption agreement and paying the adoption fee of $100 for a single rabbit or $150 for a bonded pair. Our adoption agreement stipulates that rabbits must be housed indoors as part of the family. For more information, please visit our website.

Service Areas

Our organization operates in Contra Costa County and has adopters and fosters located in Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo counties. We provide services throughout the Bay Area.

House Rabbit Society in Richmond, CA

House Rabbit Society is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to animal welfare, headquartered in Richmond, California. Our mission consists of two main components: First, through our fostering program, we engage volunteers to rescue abandoned rabbits and facilitate their adoption into permanent homes. Second, we focus on education to decrease the number of unwanted rabbits and enhance the lives of these often-misunderstood pets by helping people understand their needs better. We firmly oppose the exploitation of rabbits in all forms. Since our founding in 1988, we have successfully rescued over 30,000 rabbits through our network of foster homes across the United States. Many of these rabbits were at risk of euthanasia in shelters or were considered "unadoptable" due to age, health issues, or temperament. With no time constraints for our rescued rabbits, our foster parents can get to know each individual bunny, allowing for better matches with potential adopters. We ensure that all incoming rabbits are spayed or neutered, receive necessary veterinary care, and have their social needs addressed. Our extensive experience caring for a diverse range of rabbits has provided us with valuable insights into their social, behavioral, and medical requirements. By sharing this knowledge, we assist others in improving their relationships with their rabbits. We distribute educational materials to veterinarians and humane societies and provide support to individual rabbit owners in addressing behavioral and health issues, primarily through our website, rabbit.org, and our quarterly publication, House Rabbit Journal. Over the past two decades, our organization has expanded from 300 to over 8,000 members, with local chapters and educators in 37 states, as well as in Canada, Italy, Hong Kong, Australia, Greece, Japan, and Singapore. Our website, rabbit.org, receives over 100,000 visits daily from individuals in numerous countries worldwide.
