Adoption Process
Terriers in Rescue are in significant need of suitable homes, particularly for Jack Russell Terriers (JRTs). While they may require some special handling, adopting a terrier can be more fulfilling than bringing home a new puppy. Please consider the following important points regarding the adoption process for a Jack Russell Terrier. First, review the "Bad Dog Talk," which outlines the potential challenges of owning a JRT. All applicants must complete an adoption form, available in both online and printed formats. It is essential that all rescue dogs have proper containment, such as a fence or kennel. We do not place dogs in homes with children under six years of age, and we have very few dogs that are compatible with cats. We generally avoid placing terriers of the same sex in the same household due to the potential for fighting. Additionally, we do not recommend JRTs for metropolitan living, nor do we support placing terriers in situations where they must be left alone for extended periods. All applicants undergo a thorough screening process and must meet specific qualifications before being considered for a terrier. Please note that compatible terriers may not be immediately available, and your patience is appreciated. Completing an application does not guarantee that a terrier will be placed with you. All terriers in our care are spayed or neutered, and an adoption fee is required to adopt a terrier from Russell Rescue, Inc.

Russell Rescue CA (San Diego) in San Diego, CA
Russell Rescue, Inc. (RRI) is a volunteer organization committed to finding permanent homes for unwanted or abandoned Jack Russell Terriers. The organization coordinates emergency rescues across the United States and collects information to effectively match dogs with suitable permanent and temporary homes. RRI is primarily funded by donations and is supported by Jack Russell Terrier enthusiasts and volunteers worldwide. Many dogs that come into rescue face abandonment due to the challenges posed by their energetic nature and specific behavioral traits. Owners often realize they are unprepared for the level of care required by this lively breed, which is instinctively inclined to hunt. Many owners are away from home for extended periods and cannot provide the necessary time, attention, and vigorous exercise that Jack Russells require. It is important to highlight that these dogs thrive in active environments, as their instincts drive them to be energetic and engaged. The mission of Russell Rescue, Inc. is to ensure that these distinctive hunting terriers are placed in the care of individuals who genuinely understand their needs. Jack Russells are unique dogs with specific requirements that may not align with every household. They can get into mischief and, if left bored, may use their considerable intelligence in destructive ways. Therefore, they need knowledgeable owners and caring guardians who can offer the necessary support for their happiness and safety. Much of the responsibility in caring for a Jack Russell involves safeguarding them from their own impulsive behaviors. These dogs are courageous and do not tolerate mistreatment, even if unintentional.
