Adoption Process

Our objective is to ensure the best possible match for each dog by considering factors such as lifestyle, energy level, exercise needs, environment, and living situation. To achieve this, our adoption process includes several steps: first, prospective adopters must complete an Adoption Application; next, they will have a playdate with the dog; this is followed by a home check of the potential adopter's residence; then, an adoption contract must be signed; and finally, an adoption fee is required. The adoption fee covers essential services, including spaying or neutering, up-to-date vaccinations, rabies vaccination, microchipping and registration, deworming, and the assurance that the dog has been raised in a stable and loving environment. Our dogs are fostered in homes to simulate the type of environment they will be adopted into. We focus on meeting each dog’s needs for exercise, socialization, and basic training, including potty training.

The Barking Lot in San Diego, CA

The Barking Lot was established a few years ago when I welcomed my first foster dog, Patti Cake, into my home, motivated by a desire to make a meaningful difference for my beloved canine companions. Shortly thereafter, I received a distressing email stating that a dog was scheduled to be euthanized. Driven by concern, I took immediate action to save her. I successfully rescued her, and I am pleased to share that she now lives happily in Encinitas, thanks to her new name, Raspberry, chosen by my nephew. After facilitating her adoption, I realized that the process was not as difficult as I had anticipated. This experience led to the adoption of over 900 dogs over three years, culminating in the formation of The Barking Lot. Dogs serve as not only loyal companions but also invaluable teachers. We have learned that every dog deserves a chance at a better life and that their behavior can improve significantly when their needs are met and effective leadership is provided. These animals express profound gratitude, making them incredibly rewarding to work with. We rescue dogs from local shelters, humane societies, and even Mexico, focusing on those at risk of euthanasia or abandonment. As a small organization with a dedicated group of volunteers, we are in the early stages of operating as a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We are seeking additional volunteers to join us in our mission and to enhance our efforts. We welcome both volunteers and donations to support our work with these deserving animals.
