Animal Refuge Center in Fort Myers, FL
Animal Refuge Center is an animal shelter located in Fort Myers, Florida, in Lee County, where 8 other animal shelters and rescues also operate; the shelter sits about 100 miles north of Tampa. A 501(c)3, non-euthanasia organization, it describes itself as the largest no-kill shelter/sanctuary in Southwest Florida, providing interim shelter and medical care to owner-surrendered cats and dogs who have become homeless, injured, or abandoned. Its philosophy holds that once an animal is accepted into its care, it will not be destroyed to make room for another, and it places approximately 500 dogs and cats per year into responsible, loving homes through direct and indirect adoptions. The organization also focuses on community education about animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering, with the long-term goal of eliminating euthanasia.
