Adoption Process
Our adoption process involves several steps to ensure the best match for our animals and potential adopters. Once an application is submitted, we contact the veterinary reference provided. If there is no veterinary reference, we require three personal references, which can include family and friends who have pets that the applicant interacts with. Following this, our Director of Adoptions will schedule a phone interview with the applicant. If the application is approved, a member of our Adoption Team will conduct a virtual home visit. Upon further approval, the foster parent will reach out to the applicant to discuss the pet and arrange a visit. If both the applicant and the foster parent feel it is a suitable match, same-day adoption can occur. We prioritize finding the best possible match rather than operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Our policy ensures that we will always take our animals back if the match is not perfect or if the adopter can no longer care for the pet. We aim to prevent animals from returning to the shelter system. Additionally, we do not adopt to families with intact dogs or cats, unless there is a medical reason, as part of our commitment to supporting nationwide spay and neuter efforts to reduce the number of unwanted pets. We adopt to residents of Washington, D.C., as well as parts of Maryland and Virginia. In some cases, we may consider adopters from further away, but we will require their local humane society to conduct a home visit on our behalf. We provide lifetime follow-ups and encourage our adopters to keep us informed about their pets. Upon adoption, each adopter receives a package that includes a contract and medical paperwork related to the pet. Adoption fees are set at $125 for cats, $300 for dogs, and $325 for puppies.

Culpeper Humane Society in Culpeper, VA
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates entirely with volunteers and does not have a physical facility. Our mission is to create a no-kill community by implementing strategies that increase the outflow of animals from shelters while reducing the intake of animals into shelters. To support this mission, we provide free and low-cost spay and neuter services, with all pit bulls and pit mixes being altered at no charge. Our Pet Pantry distributes over 2,000 pounds of free pet food to individuals receiving federal, state, or county assistance through social services. We also run the Unchained Canines of Culpeper initiative, which builds pens and provides shelter and food for dogs that were previously chained. Additionally, we have established a robust Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program through our TNR Alliance, along with fostering programs, barn cat placements, and partnerships with no-kill rescue groups in the Mid-Atlantic region. As a small but dedicated group, we are committed to achieving our goals.
