Adoption Process

Diamonds in the Ruff (DITR) works in partnership with animal control agencies, shelters, and rescue groups to connect dogs in their care with suitable individuals and families. We provide foster homes for these dogs and conduct in-home visits to assess potential adopters, ensuring they can offer a safe and healthy environment. Applicants are required to complete the adoption paperwork from each agency as well as our detailed application, which helps us understand their preferences and requirements for an "ideal dog." Adoption fees are paid directly to the respective shelter or rescue organization, and our services are provided at no cost.

Service Areas

We serve the areas of Montgomery County, Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Lynchburg, and Pipestem.

Diamonds in the Ruff of Virginia, Inc. in Blacksburg, VA

DITR is dedicated to connecting dogs in need with individuals who can benefit from their companionship, specifically pairing shelter dogs with people affected by disabilities. We believe that the bond between humans and animals promotes health and well-being for both parties, creating mutual benefits. To fulfill our mission, we meticulously screen shelter dogs to identify those that align well with our applicants' lifestyles and specific preferences for their ideal dog. Selected dogs are then fostered by a DITR associate for up to 30 days, during which they undergo further evaluation, socialization, and basic training. This training includes crate training, house training, manners, and essential commands. The program is designed and supervised by experts in service dog training, animal behavior, and veterinary medicine, along with professionals from reputable organizations that support individuals with disabilities. Our comprehensive screening, evaluation, training, and matching process aims to ensure that both dogs and individuals are suitably paired, facilitating a smooth transition and reducing adoption barriers for those facing the daily challenges of disability. After completing the in-home evaluation and training, the dog's foster will conduct an orientation at the adoptive family's home to demonstrate commands and discuss daily routines with the new family.
