Adoption Process

The adoption process at APBR involves several steps to ensure a responsible match between pets and their new families. First, an experienced adoption counselor reviews the application submitted by the prospective adopter. Following this, the foster parent and a volunteer will contact the applicant to conduct a phone interview. APBR will perform two personal reference checks and reach out to the applicant's veterinarian for additional insights. A background check is also conducted. Prior to finalizing any adoption, a home visit is required to assess the living environment. If necessary, a dog-to-dog introduction will take place before the adoption is approved. Once these steps are completed, the adopter will sign a legally binding adoption contract and pay an adoption fee ranging from $325 to $375. Additionally, the adopter is required to register the dog for obedience classes within one month of adoption. APBR has specific criteria for potential adopters. Individuals under 21 years of age, those residing outside the DC Metro area, households with intact dogs, those living in areas with breed-specific legislation, and renters without landlord permission to have pets will not be eligible for adoption. Furthermore, if the foster parent or adoption counselor believes that the applicant cannot meet the terms of the adoption contract, the application will be disqualified.

Ambassador Pit Bull Rescue in Sterling, VA

Ambassador Pit Bull Rescue (APBR) is a dedicated breed-specific rescue and placement organization focused on the rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible rehoming of neglected, surrendered, or homeless Pit Bull dogs in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area, including Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. In addition to its rescue efforts, APBR is committed to educating the public about responsible dog ownership, particularly regarding the proper care and training of Pit Bulls. APBR operates as an all-volunteer organization, staffed by experienced rescuers who have been involved in rescuing and placing Pit Bull-type dogs for many years. The organization does not compensate its officers, directors, or volunteers in any way, ensuring that all resources are directed toward the dogs. Administrative costs are kept to a minimum, as every dollar spent on administration is seen as a reduction in funds available for the animals. Private contributions are utilized for various expenses related to the rescue of Pit Bull dogs, including shelter fees, veterinary care for spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and necessary testing for heartworm and other diseases. Many dogs entering the program require additional medical treatment for infections, injuries, or illnesses before they can be placed for adoption. Since adoption fees do not fully cover the costs associated with these situations, APBR relies on substantial support from the community. A small portion of this funding is allocated for merchandise that is sold to raise additional funds. All activities of APBR are overseen and managed by its officers and board of directors.
