City Dogs Rescue in Washington, DC
City Dogs Rescue serves Washington, District of Columbia, located in the District of Columbia and about 1 mile southeast of downtown DC, with 11 other animal shelters and rescues also based in the district. Operating as City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue, it is a 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 2011 that rescues dogs and cats from overwhelmed, underfunded rural shelters where they face high risk of euthanasia. The organization provides urgent medical care and places roughly 1,200 animals each year into loving DC-area foster homes until they are adopted, relying on a foster-based system and a network of more than 500 volunteers. Since 2011 it has saved over 14,000 dogs and cats and has been voted Best of DC for animal rescues multiple times.

Adopters submit an online application, then are assigned a volunteer applications counselor; the rescue conducts vet checks, landlord/condo checks, and a virtual home visit before signing an adoption contract and paying an adoption fee.
