Adoption Process

Our adoption process begins with an application, which can be accessed on our website. Applicants can submit the completed form via email or inquire about adoption through platforms such as Adopt-a-Pet and Petfinder, where we list all available animals. We also maintain a Facebook group called Stone County Humane Society Adoptions Available, which serves to locate owners of lost pets and showcase animals ready for adoption. Unfortunately, our main Facebook page was compromised a few years ago, and we have not set it up again. The adoption fees are $100 for dogs, $50 for cats, and $150 for dogs trained through a local Paws in Prison program, in which we participate every eight weeks by sending two dogs for training and adoption. Our adoption fees cover essential services, including spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccinations, two sets of vaccinations for puppies and kittens, a 4DXPlus Idexx Snap test for heartworm, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, and one additional illness, as well as deworming medication. To ensure responsible pet ownership, we require veterinary references and gather as much information as possible to assess an applicant’s suitability to adopt an animal from the Stone County Humane Society.

Service Areas

We serve Stone County, Arkansas, where Mountain View is located. Additionally, we allow clients from Izard County, Searcy County, and Cleburne County, who live near the Stone County border, to access our subsidized low-cost spay and neuter program for their animals.

Stone County Humane Society Inc. in Mountain View, AR

We are a dedicated group that established a 501(C)3 organization in 1999. Our members, who have retired to this area from various locations, bring diverse professional backgrounds to our mission. Our President, a retired Air Force Colonel and former nurse, recognized a significant need in this rural community for education on animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering. This realization led us to create a shelter for the unwanted animals in Stone County. I joined the organization in 2008, and our vision for a shelter became a reality when we received a generous estate trust from a local resident who passed away, which will be distributed over a 12-year period. With this support, we secured a bank loan to construct the shelter, which was completed in August. We are committed to ensuring that all animals receive proper care and love, rather than being neglected or used solely for breeding purposes. Over the years, we have conducted several small-scale rescues in collaboration with local authorities, including a significant case where we assisted in addressing a hoarding situation involving 200 dogs. The ASPCA was involved in resolving that issue. Our shelter can accommodate approximately 20 to 25 dogs and an equal number of cats at any given time. Currently, we do not have a foster program to expand our capacity for unwanted animals, so we operate from a waitlist, prioritizing animals in imminent danger. In 2016, we successfully adopted out 128 dogs and transported 37 dogs to a Colorado rescue organization that partners with us and has the facilities to care for them until they find permanent homes. We took in a total of 170 dogs, successfully returning 38 to their owners. Additionally, we adopted out 59 cats, accepted 68 cats through surrender, and spayed and neutered 249 animals.
