Adoption Process

The adoption process begins with the completion of an online application. Applicants must provide their veterinarian's contact information, which we will use to request references. It is essential that all pets currently in the applicant's home are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. We will also conduct a phone interview to better understand the applicant's situation. Following the phone interview, we will arrange a home visit. If everything proceeds positively, we will schedule a meeting for the applicant to meet the dog. If the applicant has other dogs, we encourage them to bring them along for the introduction. We require monthly updates and photos of the adopted dog. The adoption fee is set at $300, which covers several essential services, including spaying or neutering the dog—adoptions will not be permitted unless the dog has been altered. The fee also includes vaccinations, including rabies if the dog is of appropriate age, deworming, and microchipping. All rescued dogs and puppies spend at least 14 days in a foster home to ensure they are spayed or neutered and have a period of quarantine. Before leaving our care, each dog or puppy receives a final check-up with our veterinarian.

Service Areas

The service areas include Kanawha, Boone, Logan, Mingo, Clay, Putnam, Cabell, Fayetteville, Greenbrier, and Upshur counties.

Stepping Stones Canine Fosters WV in Charleston, WV

We are a foster and rescue group dedicated to serving various counties in West Virginia. Our primary goal is to spay and neuter as many animals as possible while educating pet owners on the importance of this practice. When we are approached for rescue, we require that any pet being kept by the owner is also spayed or neutered at our expense. We collaborate closely with Help For Animals, located in Barboursville, West Virginia. Dr. Kelly Pinkston and Brandy Jones, DVM, often reach out to us to take in litters of abandoned puppies or dogs. During each visit, we transport up to 30 animals to be spayed or neutered. We offer this essential service to local communities and can take a pet from an owner for this procedure, with the owner covering the associated costs.
