Before you bring a puppy home

A few things worth sorting out before you meet the puppy you like.

  • Ask what's been done

Vaccines, deworming, a microchip, and whether spay or neuter is done or booked. Rescues usually list these on the puppy's page.

  • Expect an application

Most shelters and rescues ask for an application, references or a home visit, and an adoption fee. Popular puppies go quickly, so apply early.

  • Puppy-proof one room

Lift cords, shoes and houseplants out of reach, and set up a crate or a gated area where your puppy can rest.

  • Plan the first few weeks

Book a vet visit soon after pickup, and plan for frequent trips outside while your puppy learns house training.
