More about ROME*

Meet Rome, the mixed breed. Rome initially came into the Shelter with his two siblings Raye and Ronan, who have since been adopted. Rome really relied on them for his self esteem and, with them gone, has reverted to being fairly unsure and apprehensive. Staff and volunteers have made slow progress with having him grow in confidence through the introduction of other dog-savvy dogs. One of Rome’s friends Thor is his right hand man. Rome enjoys following Thor around on leash on the Shelter grounds and playing together in the exercise yards. Staff have determined that it would be best for Rome to go to an adoptive home with another dog. He seeks the canine-focused communication of a dog friend as well as watching them navigate environments and new people… which helps Rome to feel comfortable following in their shadow. A home with another dog is required and meet and greets will need to occur at the Shelter prior to adoption. Rome is a diamond in the rough. This fearful guy has a soft, sweet side in there waiting to bond when he is comfortable. Could that be with you? Rome's adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation's Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
