More about Hindsight

Adoption fee: $650 They say hindsight is 20/20 — and with Hindsight, that's exactly the view she prefers.   This 1-2 year old, 27 lb sweet, friendly Red Heeler mix arrived from a shelter and although uncertain of her fate, immediately showed us her loving and gentle nature, rolling over to ask for belly rubs, belly rubs... and then more belly rubs. She met other dogs as well as a cat and was fine coexisting with all of them, but made one thing clear - she wanted to be near a human (ideally on her back, with her belly in the air - prime position for... you guessed it - belly rubs!)   In her foster home, it was clear she was unfamiliar with walking on a leash. Day by day, with her doggy foster brother leading the charge, she crept forward — first to the end of the driveway, then halfway down the street, and on day 3 and beyond, the full neighborhood circuit. Not because anyone pushed her. Because she watched him, decided it looked safe, and followed. She also reads canine social cues beautifully, gracefully yielding the prime spot in front of the fireplace the moment her foster brother glances in that direction — no drama, just quiet wisdom.   And then there's The Belly Tax.   Approach her and she will immediately execute a smooth sideways lean, presenting her chest and belly with complete confidence. Resistance is futile. She accepts all forms of scratches.   On walks and at home, she's genuinely social — friendly with dogs and humans alike, unbothered by new people coming through the door. She has excellent recall around the house and in the backyard, and responds remarkably well to gentle corrections — a quick, hushed uh uh is all it takes. That Heeler intelligence is very much present and accounted for, and she genuinely wants to get it right. She's food motivated and eager to learn — already sitting for treats. She does eat quickly, so a slow feeder or puzzle bowl is a must to pace her meals and keep that busy Heeler brain engaged at the same time.   She's not needy. When foster mom settles in to work, Hindsight finds a couch or a cool patch of hardwood and naps contentedly. Chewing is her evening hobby of choice — a bully stick, Nyla bone, or stuffed Kong keeps her perfectly happy and mentally engaged.   She doesn't have a mean bone in her body — no fear, no aggression — but she does carry a little love and food insecurity, likely from wherever she came from. When her canine companion is getting attention, she'd like some too. And at mealtime, a gentle reminder to wait in her eating area until her companion is finished goes a long way — she remembers, and she listens. These aren't problem behaviors; they're invitations for gentle guidance, and she responds to it beautifully. Build her confidence slowly and consistently, and she will reward you tenfold.   Hindsight's ideal home has a confident, playful resident dog who can be both mentor and playmate — someone to show her the ropes and then tear around the backyard with her. She tries her best to engage her 9.5-year-old foster brother in a good romp, and while he's a wonderful mentor, he's firmly retired from zoomies. Hindsight would absolutely light up with a kindred spirit who's game to join her. Equally important is a patient, experienced human who understands that gentle structure and consistency are how trust is built. The good news is she's not starting from zero. Hindsight loves everyone she meets, shows no fear of people, and responds to a quiet correction like a pro. She just needs someone who will meet her where she is and bring her the rest of the way.   After all, the best view isn't always from behind. Hindsight is just figuring that out.
