More about POPPI

Meet Poppi, the long haired chihuahua Papillon mix! Poppi arrived at the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She primarily lived with a senior individual and it was a fairly quiet household, free from a lot of visitors. The transition to the Shelter was, understandably, a bit overwhelming but after a few days - Poppi started to expand her circle of trust to include familiar, gentle handlers. Adopters should anticipate that Poppi may be shy and more of the wallflower type. Going to the brewery with you may not be her cup of tea, especially in the transition to the new home. In her previous home, Poppi spent the majority of her time indoors and was potty pad trained. She enjoyed sleeping on the couch and playing with squeaky toys. At the Shelter, she has enjoyed going out to the exercise yard with similar sized dogs and it seems to help her feel more comfortable. Staff observed that when she was out with her kennelmate Lady Vixy, she seemed to relax significantly. A home with another dog may help Poppi transition to her adoptive home and provide a sense of enrichment that we humans just cannot do for her!Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
