Date into Rescue:1/28/2026 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release.  Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Mateo is neutered, up to date on all vaccines and has a negative heartworm test. On 02/13/26 he had a dental polishing. We have no history on Mateo pre-rescue. Our best guess is that he is a terrier / poodle mix. We cannot guarantee that he is hypoallergenic or that he won't shed. Weight: 21 lbs Height: 14 in Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $499 Fence needed? Yes, Mateo needs a fenced in yard to run around and play in! What kind of home would be best for me? Mateo is still learning that pets and affection are positive experiences. While he truly enjoys gentle attention, it takes him a little time to build trust with new people. Once he feels safe and understands that you mean him no harm, his loving side begins to shine, and he happily soaks up the affection. The same goes for being picked up - Mateo is still gaining confidence with this and needs to trust his person before he feels comfortable being lifted and cuddled. With patience and respect for his pace, he continues to grow braver every day.  Mateo is looking for a home without another dog. While he can tolerate other dogs, he prefers his space and we have seen a dog that is happier with just his people. If he is to interact with other dogs, he typically does better with larger more confident dogs that can withstand his bossy nature. Mateo is also still learning about walking on a leash. Right now, leashes make him a bit nervous because they are new to him, but he is beginning to understand that they are nothing to fear. Mateo is not a good candidate for a home with children. What is my personality like? Mateo is a handsome brown terrier with the prettiest hazel-colored eyes and a gentle heart that is still learning to trust the world around him. Mateo is a sweet and sensitive boy who is discovering that life as a beloved pet can be safe, kind, and full of good things. True to a terrier he likes to be a boss with other dogs. However, with people he follows their lead and learns from our gentleness and kindness. Mateo is a sweet boy who wears his heart on his sleeve. With patient guidance, gentle encouragement, and positive experiences, he will continue to build confidence and develop this important skill.  A calm, patient home will help Mateo continue to blossom. With time, kindness, and consistency, this sweet boy will grow into a deeply devoted companion who loves attention, enjoys being close to his people, and brings a quiet sweetness to the home lucky enough to welcome him. How do I act when I first meet new people? Mateo requires a slow and gentle approach. He does not want to be cornered or immediately petted. He wants to observe and check his surroundings first. He loves treats and while he will not yet take one from a hand, he will eat them if you toss them to him. Other tips and tidbits: We have no history on Mateo pre-rescue. The shelter aged him at 4 years old. We celebrate his birthday 1/28/2022. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
