More about SQUIRREL*

Meet Squirrel, the Australian Shepherd! Squirrel came from a home where he lived primarily outdoors with another dog (his sibling). He enjoyed playing with balls and toys as well as playing with his brother. Squirrel had escaped from the property a handful of times, and his guardian could not securely contain him. We often see dogs come into the Shelter after escaping their property due to being a bit under stimulated and needing more one-on-one time with their people (going for walks, playing, or simply just hanging out). Adopters for Squirrel are recommended to keep him inside when unattended and to have him on a leash if he is outside. Leaving Squirrel outdoors unattended as they are getting to know him is not recommended (as with any newly adopted dog). Staff have observed that Squirrel has been socializing and appeasing since his arrival. He walks nicely on leash. He has met other dogs and is interested in interactions. A resident dog may be a fit for this guy after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Due to previously reported prey drive, a home with cats or small animals is not recommended. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
