Animal Shelters in Berkeley, CA

Berkeley has three listed animal shelters and rescue organizations, in Alameda County. The mix is fairly even between rescue organizations and humane societies. Berkely and El Cerrito, both within about four miles, have listings of their own. A handful of places, and behind each of them a dog or cat hoping this is the week.

Berkeley has three listed at the moment, and they are shown above with the ones that have photos first.

A mix of both, and the difference is worth knowing before you set out. A rescue usually places animals from a network of foster homes rather than from premises you can walk into, so you generally arrange a meeting first. A shelter or humane society more often has a facility you can visit during opening hours.

The Berkeley listings all fall in Alameda County, which is worth knowing if you are checking whether a shelter takes animals from your area.

If nothing here suits, Berkely, El Cerrito and Richmond all have listings within about five miles. Each one links through from the sidebar.

Every listing here carries a phone number, and most link to the organization's own website. Calling ahead is worth it — opening hours change, and rescues often work by appointment rather than keeping a building open.
