Adoption Process

HSSM follows an open adoption process, allowing potential adopters to visit the shelter during business hours to meet the animals available for adoption. Adoption Counselors are available to help ensure suitable matches between adopters and pets. For cats over six months of age, the adoption fee is a "Pick-Your-Purr-ice" model, where adopters are encouraged to make a donation of any amount they choose, in addition to a $5 tag fee. Cats under six months have a set adoption fee of $40. Dog adoption fees vary between $50 and $150, depending on the adoptability of the animal.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is dedicated to strengthening the relationship between humans and animals. Our mission encompasses providing exceptional care and compassion to the animals in our shelter, addressing the issue of companion animal overpopulation, and improving the rate of animal rescues in our community. As a progressive open-admission shelter, HSSM takes in approximately 12,000 homeless pets each year. In addition to providing shelter for these animals, we perform around 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries annually through our Louise Fenner Claiborne Spay Neuter Clinic and offer microchipping services to many others through our outreach programs. In line with our commitment to animal welfare, HSSM's Board of Directors has launched an initiative called Countdown to Zero, aimed at ending the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in our community by 2015.
